Just got a call and e-mail from my son’s high school principal that reads in part “Early this morning, a student reported to me that a few kids in the hall before school were talking about a rumor of someone bringing a gun to [our] High School on Friday, 12/21. We immediately took the following actions: notified [police] and began an investigation to determine the credibility of the alleged threat. Within minutes, we were able to identify the source of the alleged threat. We then isolated that student and conducted interviews with more than a dozen students and searches of student backpacks and lockers.” I think this incident had more to do with kid’s that are afraid of their own shadows since last Friday’s events than a real physical threat. There was more to the letter and this was ultimately determined to be a false alarm but can we all agree that the culture of violence in our society needs to be addressed?! For the second time in a week I will have to sit down and have another ‘discussion’ with my teenager. Not saying that parents shouldn’t do that… just that I find it sad and disturbing that we have to do it so damn often.
